The Human Brain : From Neurone to Nervous System
CUTANEOUS PAIN AND NOCICEPTION
This tutorial is concerned with the peripheral organisation of neurones that signal pain and temperature sensation in the skin.
Conscious animals and humans perceive sensations including touch, vibration, temperature and pain.
Innocuous sensations are mediated by afferents with encapsulated sensory endings, while noxious sensations are mediated by small diameter axons with free nerve endings.
Key Words : Innocuous Sensations- touch, temperature, myelinated afferents, encapsulated nerve endings; noxious sensation - extremes of temperature and injurious stimuli, unmyelinated free endings.
