  1. Oligodendrocyes are the cells that produce myelin within the CNS.

  2. Unlike the Schwann cells that produce myelin around a single axon within peripheral nerves, oligodendrocytes have several processes, each of which wraps its myelin around a central axon. Each oligodendrocyte therefore provides myelin for many axons within the CNS.
